Word 2003 constantly freezes!

I am currently running Word 2003. Whenever I try to cut
and paste a figure or simply create a text box, the
program hangs and does not recover.

What can I do? All my updates are current.

First clear all of your temp files. Word creates temp files for
various functions such as Cut and inserting a drawing canvas.

- Exit Word and Outlook if you are using it as your email editor and
reboot your computer if you recently experienced a crash
- Go to Start/Find/Files or Folders (or Start/Search then select Files
or Folders)
- Change "Look in" to reflect the drive/folder to the root of your
Local drive.
- In the Named text box, type *.tmp
- Click the "Find Now" command
- Delete the temp files you find.

*Note that these can be deleted directly from the Find Results.

To group the files for a single deletion:
- Click any file in the list
- Press <Ctrl A> to select all

Should you encounter a "File in use" error, press <Ctrl> and click the
file to deselect it.

As an additional note, the Owner file is another temporary files Word
creates. If you have been experiencing multiple crashes or if Word has
been hanging on you then it is best to search for Owner files
(~$*.do?) and delete those as well. These can cause "file in use" and
"read only" errors.

For more information on this and a full cleanup/maintenance procedure
that should be run periodically, see this article:

Every 3rd or 4th time I start my machine and run Outlook 2003 it crashes. If I let it restart, it crashes. I have to find my original install disks and run a repair and then it works fine

I've tried

- Deleting all *.tmp files on all drives after restar
- defragmenting the disk (thought maybe something was written on marginal sector perhaps?
- I have tried uninstalling Outlook 2003 and reinstalling also. But it still reoccurs

All my updates are current - I don't have any idea what to do and keeping the Office install disk in the drive at all times because I know it is coming concerns me. I don't have any other problems with any other Office (or otherwise) applications

I **SUSPECT** this has something to do with the preview pane. I leave it open by default and **SOMETIMES** when the first crash happens the preview pane is disabled on second load and the crash doesn't happen. If I reopen the preview pane it crashes again

Glad to provide any details, info here is Sysinfo dump

The Reading Pane is disabled because Outlook is started in Safe Mode. In
safe mode Outlook won't start with the Reading Pane enabled, it doesn't load
certain files and doesn't load any add-ins.

To start with you'll need to make sure all of your add-ins are compatible
with Outlook 2003 and properly installed. When they are you start
troubleshooting Outlook;

1) try running scanpst.exe on your Personal Folder

2) try renaming outcmd.dat to .old and restart Outlook. All the Toolbars
will reset then. This is quite a common problem with Outlook . The default
location for this file is:
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook

3) try recreating the profile in Control Panel-> Mail-> button Show Profiles

4) try running Outlook with the /safe switch from your Start-> Run window.
When this works run Help-> Detect and Repair
5) try disabling individual add-ons in Tools-> Options-> tab Other-> button
Advanced E-mail Options...
