word 2003 continuously "encounters an error"

I installed office 2003 pro a few days ago, included the latest updates, and
it all worked good until yesterday, when word simply stopped working:
whichever file I open (old or new, long or short,with images or simple text)
in a few seconds I getthe "word encountered an error and needs to close"
error.
any suggestion?
