word 2003 crashes

K

KC PE

I am using Word 2003, on XP Professional, stand alone computer. When I have
two Word documents open and am copying text from one to another, the program
crashes. I made the changes as noted in Article ID 555169, restarted the
computer, but the problem is still occuring. It does not appear to happen
when all of the text.

Does Word actually crash or does the application quit with no error
message?

If it is crashing then what is the exact error message you are
encountering?

Also, it looks like you inadvertently omitted some details at the end,
"it does not appear to happen when all of the text..." what was the
additional information?

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

A box opens that says, " Mocrofoft Office Word has encountered a problem and
needs to close." The information in the error report is:

AppName: winword.exe AppVer: 11.0.6568.0 AppStamp: 42e178a5
Modname: winword.exe ModVer: 11.0.6568.0 ModStamp: 42e178a5
The end of my original message is that it does not happen with all text. If
I try to copy other protions of text and insert it to a different location in
the document it may work ok, but not all of the time.

When is the last time you cleaned your temp files? When you copy/paste
between documents Word may create a temp file and if Word runs into a
rogue temp file then errors can occur.

Delete all temp (*.tmp) files:
- Exit Word and Outlook if you are using it as your email editor and
reboot your computer if you recently experienced a crash
- Go to Start/Find/Files or Folders (or Start/Search then select Files
or Folders)
- Change "Look in" to reflect the drive/folder to the root of your
Local drive.
- In the Named text box, type *.tmp
- Click the "Find Now" command
- Delete the temp files you find.

*Note that these can be deleted directly from the Find Results.

To group the files for a single deletion:
- Click any file in the list
- Press <Ctrl A> to select all

Should you encounter a "File in use" error, press <Ctrl> and click the
file to deselect it.

As an additional note, the Owner file is another temporary files Word
creates. If you have been experiencing multiple crashes or if Word has
been hanging on you then it is best to search for Owner files
(~$*.do?) and delete those as well. These can cause "file in use" and
"read only" errors.

For more information on this and a full cleanup/maintenance procedure
that should be run periodically, see this article:

Actually, in this situation it's best to use Windows Search to search
for temp files, rather than clearing the Temp folder, is because Word
creates some temp files (*.tmp) in the same folder as the document.

Specifically, temp files that contain text for copying between
documents are not placed in the Temp folder, but rather the document
folder supplying the source of the copied text.

Actually I have never seen *.tmp files left in the document folders after a
crash, which is why I addressed the files that cause problems, however the
web page was due for an update and I have now done this to to broaden the
search for tmp files in the document folders complete with new illustrations
for Word 2003/Windows XP. The revised page is uploading at this moment :)

I've had temp files in the document source folders and this KB article
provides specific information on where temp files are created:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632

Plus, it's due to the deletion of temp files in the document source
folders that Word users must have Erase/Delete privileges in order to
modify Word documents.

Beth:

I cleaned the *.tmp, ~*.do?, and ~*.wkb files. Then tried to cut & paste
and am getting the same error. Would like to sort out the problem but am
under a deadline to complete a job. Will check back in later to resolve the
issue.

The problem is described in KB912022. Microsoft has a hotfix for the problem
but has not released it yet. Microsoft offers the Hotfixe on a no-charge
basis but the only way to get it is to pay U$35.00 to a Microsoft Support
Professional on a Pay-Per-Incident basis to resolve this issue. You may
contact them at: (800)-936-5700, Monday to Friday, 5:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M.
Pacific Time and Saturday to Sunday, 6:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. Pacific Time.

You just have to deal with or pay the U$35.00 as Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article 912022 states that there is a "post-Microsoft Office 2003 Service
Pack 2 hotfix". The supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it
is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article.
This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not
severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next
Microsoft Office 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix."

As Suzanne noted, obtaining a hotfix is free and there should be no
upfront charges either.

Here's the number to call: 1-800-936-4900 (press 3 for hotfixes)

Explain to them you are calling to obtain the hotfix described in
KB912022, they'll ask a few questions, and then they will email you
the hotfix and/or the instructions for obtaining it.
