word 2003 - cursor movement

I just moved up from word 2000, which I find very good, but my company
"upgraded" , hahaha. As happens too often with microsoft, I am having
a hard time distiguishing between what the new software does "for" me
from what it does "to" me.

When I type a CR at the end of a line, the cursor does not move down
until I start to type a new sentence. As I am not a touch-typist I
find this very annoying. I want to see where it is going to go before
I type.

What useful new feature do I have to turn off to make this annoyance
go away?

I don't believe that is a feature of Word 2003, as, in general, the
insertion point does move to the next line upon hitting <enter>.

What I have experienced is that when using some (perhaps not best quality
production) fonts, the insertion point goes invisible at end of paragraph
and shows up when I start typing the next. This happens in just a few of
the typefaces I have installed.

Thanks for responding, Val.

I actually think I managed to hit the right button in the
Tools/Options/Edit to cure this particular annoyance.

If I uncheck "Use smart paragraph selection", then my problem almost
completely disappears. That is, the time delay before redisplaying
the cursor is vastly shortened.

I suspected before that one of my problems is I have a very old PC
that is only about 1/10 the speed of the newer machines, and it just
cannot get thru the added code in the newer word version quick enough
to be transparent on many of the newer word features.

Maybe you are experiencing something similar with extra code being
processed in those added fonts. How fast is your PC - mine is only
300 mhz. I'll bet the MS wienies that work on this stuff have the
fastest, newest machines to play on.

I still have some additional dislikes about this 2003 version, but
will post some new threads as they start to bother me.

Maybe you can help on those as well.

The programmers may not all be running the most up to date machines, but
yes, your 300MHz is awfully low powered for today's software. How much RAM
do you have, and which flavor of Windows? These will also have a big
impact.

Val

Yes, I know all this, but I work at home, and it's a wonderful old pc.

W2000, so it's not too ridiculous. It's 256 meg - perfectly adequate
for this machine, hahaha.

If I really have to run something modern, I use my new Toshiba
notebook which is 2.2 or 2.5 ghz?, and 1.5 gbytes ram.

The old one however has a very expensive video card that was top of
the line when new, and it still runs rings around most video
chips/cards today, and it's a 21 inch original IBM monitor that's the
best display I've ever used. I can write all day and half the night
and my eyes don't get fatigued - that's worth something!

But I want to play around with the voice recog. feature of the newer
ms-weird versions - I have 2003 - so I might have to fire that up on
the Toshiba where all the audio stuff is.

Have you ever used it?
