Word 2003 document when read using Word 2000 suddenly has attachme

I produce a word document using Word 2003 then send it to others using
Outlook 2003 set as HTML format and Word 2003 as my mail editor. When the
others read the email (almost all using Outlook 2000) it appears OK but there
are many seperate attachments that were not there in what I sent.

Why is this and is there a way to correct it?

When you save a document as HTML, Word saves all embedded graphics as GIFs
or JPEGs, usually in a separate folder called <filename>_files. In the case
of email, evidently it just attaches them. If users have their email clients
set to display such file types within the email, they will see them as if
they were embedded, but they will still be attachments.
