Word 2003 does not open documents on first try

Hello!

I have a strange one for you. A user recently upgraded from Office 2000 Pro
to Office 2003 Pro on a Windows XP Pro laptop. Since then, when he tries to
open a Word document by either double-clicking it, choosing it from the
recent documents list under Start>Documents, or from within ReportWriter, it
opens Word, shows "Requesting virus scan" in the status bar, flashes the
mouse hourglass very quickly, then gives an empty Word window with no
document open.

If he opens Word first without any document open (or if the blank new doc is
open) and then attempts to open a file by any of the above methods, it opens
the document just fine.

He has never had any version of Norton Antivirus that has an Office plug-in.
He only has Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 8.0 installed, and it
doesn't have an Office plug-in, so I don't know what is causing the virus
scan.

Thanks for helping!

You might try this fix offered my Office MVP Beth Melton:

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:

Hello, Suzanne!

Anyway, there has never been a version of NAV on it that has the Office
plug-in. The officeav.dll file does not exist on this system.
