Word 2003 dot with vba to Word 2007 dotm

How do I convert word 2003 .dot's which have vba in them to Word 2007 .dotm's?

I've tried converting them and then saving to a .dotm but the template keeps
coming up in compatibility mode.

I'm having issues with docvariables in headers, footers and when doing mail
merges. The docvariable field text changes to funny characters when printing
for the second time.
