Word 2003 File Menu>Open doesn't work

After closing the last open document in Word, the File>Open menu does not
work. The menu pulls down but clicking on Open, or one of the recent
documents listed does not work. Key strokes work (e.g., Alt-F 1 to open the
most recent document), and clicking on the Folder icon in the Menu bar works,
but pulling down the File menu with mouse does not work.

I ran the Office Fix software with the original installation disks, but it
did not fix the problem.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried these solutions but they didn't work.
The last line on the troubleshooting tip sheet said that if deleting the
registration in registry doesn't work, completely uninstall Word and
re-install it. I may have to do that, but I'd like to avoid it.

I finally took the time to do a complete uninstall / reinstall, but the
problem persists. I didn't do the "extra" things like manually deleting
registry entry's or manually deleting file folders. I just did the Control
Panel Add/Remove Files to remove the Office Suite, and then I did a reinstall
from the original CD. That probably doesn't do a complete uninstall because
at least one add-in menu items was preserved and appeared unscathed after the
new installation.

I've found a work-around which I'll use. As I indicated, the problem is
that if I close the last (or only) document open in Word, the MS Word header
menus remain along with the standard gray-colored area where the open
document used to reside before it was closed. At that point, I cannot get
the pull-down File menu to respond using mouse clicks. (Again, keyboard
commands work but not mouse clicks.) However, if I open a new blank document
using Ctrl-N, then the File menu works and I can click on any of the most
recent documents to open them, for example.
