Word 2003: Flickering Caret

Just started using Word 2003 (was using Word 2K), and I find one thing
extremely distracting: rather than remaining a solid, unblinking line
while characters are being typed, the caret flickers & disappears
completely, but only under certain conditions. It appears to happen
only when one inserts a line of text above something already typed. So
long as the line you are typing is the last line in the document, the
caret behaves normally. But if you position the cursor above the line
you are typing, hit the return key to move that line down, move the
cursor back up one line and begin typing, the cursor starts this wierd
behavior.

Is there some way to prevent this?

That would seem to be a problem with your graphics driver. Check to see if
there is an updated graphics driver and install it.

No, I happened to have just installed the latest driver, for a
different reason. And I have a very good graphics setup, WUXGA with
Nvidia 4200, 64 mb card. Also, problem does not exist for Word 2K on
same machine. This is clearly something within Word 2003... I have
"spell check as I type", "format as I type, etc" all turned off, but
perhaps it is doing something else in the background after each
character is typed?
