word 2003 freezes on loading unreachable template

We have a large intranet (thousands of workstations) with firewalls between
different network segments.People in certain department use custom template
loaded automatically with link to the server
(\\server\share\template.dot).When they send such a document to some other
department , the recipients can't open the document due to timeout.Word tries
to load the template on and on , sometimes about 10-20 minutes.It's much more
then any timeout for any network protocol.Is there any workaround ? How can I
cancel loading the template or change the settings ? Today the only decision
is to disconnect from the network...

What version of Windows are you using? If you are using Windows XP
then there is a hotfix available for this issue:

Note if you do obtain the hotfix you'll also need to utilize the Reg
hack to activate the fix described in Part 2 of the article.

To obtain the hotfix contact Microsoft Support at: 1-800-936-4900
(press 3 for hotfix support)

If you don't use Windows XP there are a few other options, such as
having the user remove the reference to the attached template under
Tools/Templates and Add-ins prior to sending the document or you could
use a macro to remove the attached template for those documents based
on the template prior to closing the document.

We also have problems like Lexus and we thought we could use the hotfix
823372 - http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823372, but this hotfix did not
work on SP2, so my question is: Can you give us another solution for the
problem: Word 2003 freezes on loading unreachable template !!!
