Word 2003 Global template

O

Oli

Hi

We are using a shared normal.dot from a network share.
150 people are not having any problems and we use an SOE
so there are no config differences, however, with one
user they receive the following error every time they
close Word:

"Word cannot save changes to the global template because
it was opened with read-only access....."

I have reinstalled Word and installed the latest patches
with no succcess.

Any help would be great.

Cheers

Oliver

I suspect 150 people are having problems they don't attribute to the shared
normal.dot. Normal.dot should _not_ be shared. You are crippling Word. Word
is not meant to be run with normal.dot being read-only, and if it is shared,
it is being run that way. The problems you are having with the one user are
the tip of the iceberg.

Your user may be adding style changes, recording macros, adding AutoText, or
other things that experienced Word users do routinely. Also, any chance that
your user has an Add-In program or Norton Anti-Virus? Do your users have the
option checked under Tools => Options => Save (tab) to prompt for changes to
normal.dot? It should be checked and I suspect that it is not.

You can still give corporate structure to your use of Word without sharing
normal.dot. Put your styles in custom templates and have your users use
those templates for all of their work. Put any macros / toolbars / AutoText
to be shared in global templates other than normal.dot. It isn't that hard.
