Word 2003 goes crazy and locks computer!

I just installed Office 2003 Professional on my new computer running
Microsoft Vista Ultimate. I can open Word 2003 and operate for a time but
after a period of continual opening of several documents it goes crazy and
suddenly begins creating new documents endlessly!
I can't even get Task Manager to work to stop it. My computer becomes locked
and Word goes on and on! The only way I can get out of the loop is to shut my
computer down by depressing the power on button for a time.
Does anyone have any idea of what's happening and suggestions of a fix?
