Running on Vista, Word 2003, SP2 is hanging at the splash screen. When I
delete normal.dot it opens ok. However the next time it hangs again. I have
to delete normal.dot every time if word is to open.

I have tried everything relevant in this article:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm without success.
ANy other suggestions would be welcomed.

thanks a lot

Thanks for your reply.

I ignored the parts relating to NAV, adobe 5 & printers as none of these are
installed.

I deleted normal.dot and the data keys from word 11 & 12 in the registry.

If you have no printer installed, then that's probably your problem right
there. Some versions of Word insist on seeing a printer driver. You don't
have to have a printer physically connected to the computer, but you do have
to have a driver installed and selected as the default printer. If you're
ever going to print the document (from a different system or by sending it
to a service bureau such as Kinko's), then install the driver for the
printer that will be used. Otherwise, just select a generic laser printer
driver.
