Word 2003 hangs opening document

Within the last few days I've discovered that Word hangs
upon opening documents that I have recently worked on,
i.e. I wanted to edit a doc that I originally wrote on
April 16, and last Friday was unable to access it. I
copied the file to my laptop, and was able to complete the
editing. But I was unable to work on the doc on my
desktop computer. Older docs ... from last year, I can
work on just fine.
I've been using 2003 since November, editing doc, and
never had a problem.

Any ideas? Thanks

Rob,

I spent the better part of an hour browsing the FAQs...
found things that were not quite on point, tried them
anyway... and then decided to post to the group.
