Word 2003 hangs when I try to insert a picture from my scanner

When I try to insert a picture from my scanner into Word 2003 by clicking
Insert/File/From Camera or Scanner , Word simply hangs! Why does this happen?
I removed and reinstalled Word but the problem still persists!
Any help greatly appreciated.

No. The scanner works fine. I can use the scanner and camera wizard in
windows xp to scan pictures. IT's only from within Word that it is not
working. I can even use Microsoft Document Imaging to scan documents.
