Word 2003 "has encountered a problem-needs to close..."

when try to open any old or new doc. Gives option to recover and reopen in
"safe mode" but that only results in a green screen not usable. Tried to
"repair" and "reinstall", finally "deleted" and reinstalled from disk.
Same results. Can anyone help? Using XP.
