Word 2003 Header/ Footer upside down after upgrade from Office 97

When I use Word 2003 to open an existing Word document created in an earlier
version (Office 97 - Word), the Header and Footer are displayed upside down.
Both the text and graphics are flipped and there does not seem to be any way
to flip them back the right way. What's up with that?
