Word 2003 Header/Margin Problem

Steve Murphy

I had this problem with my beta version of 2003 but I
hoped it would be fixed in the final release. Microsoft
Word 2003, when I create a new document, starts with the
cursor at the very top of the page, ignoring the margin
settings. I can solve it by viewing header and footer,
which creates the appropriate space for some reason, then
entering nothing and returning to the body of the
document. I cannot figure out how to make this change
permanent. Any ideas out there?

Hi, Steve,

It isn't a bug, it's a feature -- really!

Put the cursor just below the horizontal ruler, so it changes to a little
rectangle with arrows pointing up and down, and a tooltip that says "Show
White Space". Click once to make the top of the page appear. If you go back,
the tooltip has changed to "Hide White Space", and clicking once again will
collapse the top of the page. There's also a check box for this in Tools >
Options > View, under "Print and Web Layout Options", labeled "White space
between pages (Print view only)".

Whatever the current setting, it will be maintained when you shut down and
later reopen Word. This option has no effect on the printed margins; it's
only to let you see more text on the screen at one time.

By the way, when you were running the beta version, did you ever look in the
Office beta newsgroups? This topic was covered fairly often there.
