Word 2003 - Images Slow to refresh

D

Darren Griffin

XP SP2, Word 2003, All Office Updates.

When opening a large document with images the images either don't appear or
are slow to appear. Scrolling through the document results in gaps where
the images should be. Clicking the area where the image should be sometimes
results in the image being displayed.

Picture Placeholders is not ticked. Print View is selected. If I install
Office 2000 on an identical machine the document is displayed correctly.
Workstations are brand new Dell GX280's, 512Mb RAM, 2.9GHz P4.

Any suggestions to resolve this appreciated.

Hi Darren,

Word has always pushed hard on graphic card drivers.
Be sure that you have the latest graphics card driver
installed for your card and you may also want to turn
down the graphics acceleration setting in Windows.
The 'maximum' setting isn't always the fastest performing one.

I am having exactly the same problem. It occured immediately after updating
with XP sp2. Everything worked flawlessly before. I have contacted microsoft
about this and they are trying to find a solution. If they do not succeed, I
am going to get rid of sp2.

Microsoft-helpdesk just offered the usual "Check program-options --> picture
placeholders etc." , which is not the solution for this problem. It is
somewhere deeper in the way word 2003 conflicts with xp sp2. So I just
removed the sp2 and luckily it went with no troubles. Now Word behaves
herself again and shows pictures without trouble.

It just don't get it, that the only software conflicting with xp sp2 is one
of Microsoft's own products. Anyway, one thing is sure: My next OS will not
be Windows.

....Frustrated...

Thank you, I'll check and see what Graphics Card they have and if any later
updates are available. I don't want to have to remove SP2 but I need to
resolve this as the machines will be used heavily for editing large word
documents (>100Mb) with embedded images. I guess if necessary we can revert
to Word 2000!

That could well be my issue, I added SP2 immediately as I needed to image
the machine. I'll remove it tomorrow and see if that is the cause but if it
is I would rather go back to Word 2000 than leave SP2 off.

I work as techsupport, and I am having this very problem on one of the
users computers,
its an Win2000, Office 2003 4 month old Dell,
No Spyware could be found, or anything like that.
It has the latest graphic card drivers installed.

XP service pack uninstall is not the answer for me, since we run on
2000.
The .doc looks fine on everyone's computer except for this users.
Images dont refresh for her, borders are broken. etc...
I am at a loss for how to fix it for her.

In Windows, click on Start | Control Panel | Display | Settings |
Advanced |

Troubleshoot, and turn down or turn off hardware acceleration. Does
this fix
the problem?

I had to turn it down all the way to disabling Active X -- but hey it
works until Microsoft offers a fix.

I have exactly the same problem---but have discovered an interesting wrinkle.

If I either add or remove the Drawing toolbar as an active toolbar, the
graphics instantly appear in their correct form. However, I'm not willing to
live with his "workaround" and will revert to Word 2000 if I can't find
another solution.

The fact that the graphics will appear correctly suggests to me that the
problem lies not with the video card driver nor with DirectX that rather with
Word 2003 itself. On the other hand, I'm ignorant of the internals of the
software and buy hunches could be completely wrong.
