Word 2003 Italics question

Hi, I used to be able to italicize words simply by placing the cursor
anywhere within in the word and hitting italics, but now it won't, and
requires me to highlight the whole word. Any ideas how to switch it
back. Much appreciated!

Tools | Options | Edit | When Selecting Automatically Select Entire
Word.
