To add to Val's reply, although JPG files don't have transparency, Word does have a feature tha may work (depends on how many colors
are in the 'background' and where else they appear in the graphic).
Ater inserting the graphic through Insert=>Picture=>From file into a Word document use View=>Toolbars=>Picture and select the
'transparency' tool and click on the background area of the picture.

I have a JPEG with a transparent background. However, when I drop it into a
Word 2003 page the transparent background comes out black. Is there a
