Can you provide more details on how Word keeps closing and reopening?
Do you mean you start Word and it exits and then restarts? If that's
the case then can you start Word using the /a switch? Go to Start/Run
and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

word 2003 opens 'normally'....i start to type and within minutes of using is,
that 'microsoft has encountered an error' with the 'report' or 'dont report'
buttons on the bottom of the error box are there. word then reopens with the
'recovered' document....and it goes on like this until ive accomplished what
i started out to do. ive deleted the .dot file as recommended, the norton
office plug-in is disabled. i cannot figure out what in the heck is the
problem. someone else i know has the same trouble so im sure uninstalling
and reinstalling just word wont do it. thanks for the quick response!

The additional details are helpful. :)

Instead trying it with the the /a switch, hold CTL and start Word to
start it in Safe Mode. If the error doesn't occur then the cause could
be one of the following:

- Corrupt AutoCorrect file
- Corrupt Custom dictionary
- Damaged proofing tools
- Corrupt Normal.dot (rich text AutoCorrect entry)

I noted you ruled out Normal.dot so to rule out the others:

Start Word normally, don't type anything, go to Tools/AutoCorrect and
turn off "Replace text as you type" and try typing..

If Word doesn't crash then exit Word, locate MSO1033.acl and rename
it. Make sure you do not rename any of the MSO.acl files since these
hold the default entries.

Failing that, it could be a problem in your Custom dictionary. Go to
Tools/Options/Spelling and Grammar and turn off "Check spelling as you
type" and "Check grammar as you type".

If the error doesn't occur then on the Spelling and Grammar tab click
the "Custom dictionaries" command and either remove or create a new
custom dictionary.

Corrupt Custom dictionary:
- Use Windows Search and search for *.dic
- Rename all files you find to something like OldCustom.dic

Damaged Proofing tools:
- Run Detect and Repair under the Help menu

Note these files can be renamed back if the problem still occurs.
However I recommend doing that after you found the solution and Word
is working correctly again.

I'm glad you have the problem resolved, Shelley. :)

Any idea what the exact cause was? I'm guessing a corrupt AutoCorrect
file based on your description but it would be great to know for sure.

Thank you for your help. I have this problem for several days and have not
been able to find a solution before this post. The error showed up in both
Word and Outlook.
I have one comment. There are not any MSO1033.acl on my system, so I tried
to rename MSO1030.acl instead, and it worked. Maybe it's becuase I use the
danish version of Word 2003.

You're welcome. I'm glad you were able to find a solution. :)

Also, you are correct, "1033" is a Language ID (identifier) for English and
1030 is Danish.
