Word 2003 locks up every time I click save?

I'm writing papers in word 2003(win2000sp4)sp2. and I click the save icon and
every thing in word locks up ultimately loosing my info. "I'm not going to
tolerate this much longer" its not plug-ins took them out,
Oh, when I try to shut down I"m plagued with Normal.dot already exist, no
matter what I click I can't get it to go away.

The only reason I use windows any more is for Office. They better patch this
quick.

What happens if you start Word in safe mode: from Start, Run type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word will start in Safe Mode. Can you open a document and
then close now?

When I start word in safe mode it will sometimes allow me to choose between
the older and newer work for safe to the word document which should
straighten things out. But thats when I get the normal.dot already exist do
you want to over write which then has me going in circles trying to get out
of the loop. argg

explain again more clearly what happens if you start using the /a switch
(Safe Mode).
