Word 2003 - mulitple document won't open

Has anyone else had the following problem or know of a
fix?

I am working in Word 2003 and when I try and open say a
third document in Word it won't open. I don't get an
error or word locking or anything - nothing happens - the
document won't open. If I try and open from the recently
opened items it will however open.

Anyone have any ideas. It is very frustrating as I work
in the program all day with multiple documents constantly.
