Word 2003 - New Word doc

I have Word 2003 on a XP Home PC. 'New Word document' on desktop produces a
Word doc, which opens with a dialog box saying 'Convert from (in my case)
Plain text'. I then have to save the doc as a Word doc. How can I get 'New
Word doc' to open as a Word doc in Word? Thanks

Thanks, Herb. I have three normal.dot files on my PC, and in each case,
when I open the document, which opens normally in Word, there is no text in
the document, which is blank. When I then look at its properties, these are
empty of details, except under MS-DOS the details are unknown. I expected
to see the usual Word doc details. My New doc still opens with the dialog
box set to convert from plain text.

Under documents and settings/default user/templates, I have two Winword
templates, in Word 6 etc., ., and Word 2, which open normally in Word and
have the expected properties details. Under documents and settings/my
name/application data/Microsoft, there is the normal.dot template, which
opens normally in Word, but again the expected properties details are
missing, as above. Under User templates, there are none.

What next?
