Word 2003(Office 2003) Hangs

Hi Forum,

Recently I'm noticing some strange behaviour with my word
2003.When I'm connected to the internet (using office
LAN), I'm unable to open certain documents. The
application is hung while opening.

I kill it, go to help->about microsoft word -> disbaled
items -> enable.

Now take off the network cable and open the document. It
opens without any problem.

Once I plug it back the same problem.I tried all options
of re-installing, removing normal.dot etc.Nothing works.

All documents are locally saved.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I have personally noticed that Word 2003 uses a lot of resources, such as
constant Online Help instead of local help installed on your Hard disk. You
could disable this feature from the Tools > Options > General(TAB) >
Services Options > Online Content and uncheck "Show content and links from
Microsoft Office Online.

Most likely the template to which the document is attached has been moved or
deleted. When you are not connected to the network, Word has a relatively
small area to scan to figure out that the template is unavailable and to
attach Normal.dot instead. When you're connected to the LAN, it can continue
searching for a very long time before concluding that the template cannot be
found. While disconnected, attach a different (preferably local) template to
the document (Tools | Templates and Add-ins).

Hi Suzanne,

Many Thanks...that is the problem. The doc was looking for
templates in a network location.

Is there a way to disable this feature and instruct word
to look for local template instead, immediately on start-
up.

The reason is I'm working in a diffrent office and have
received lots of documents and will continue to receive.I
can't log-off the network everytime I receive a doc,
change the template and start working :-(

Please advice me ...many thanks in advance..

I have no experience with networks, so I may be mistaken, but I don't think
there's any way around this. What you might do, if many of the documents you
receive are based on a specific template, is to create a dummy template of
that name in your user templates folder. As long as the document doesn't
have "Automatically update document styles" checked (Tools | Templates and
Add-ins), the formatting of the template is irrelevant (it can be a copy of
Normal.dot, for example).
