Word 2003 opens very slow certain files

Mike

Environment: 70 desktpos part of them with office 2000,
part with office 2003. Actually we are deploying Office
2003. Symantec Antivirus Corporate.

Now:

with office 2003 certain files open really slow (up to 5
minutes), and every time I have to right-click-open
with Wordpad then save as rtf, then open them with Word
and save them as doc again. Once these steps are
performed,
the document is opening without any problem.
Everything works well with Office 2000.
This is not how it should work!
Is there any patch or fix or a workaround for that
because
it is driving me crazy!!!

Thanks!

Am having the same problem. I use Windows XP Pro 2002
and Office 2003. I also have Symantec Antivirus
Corporate. My IT guy seems to think it has something to
do with Symantec. HELP!!

Problem is Norton AV. Just do you company a favour and dump it for something
that works properly. Try FSecure.

It does have lots to do with Norton.

Hi Terry,
It is not Norton AV. I'm using Symantec AntiVirus
Corporate edition ver.8 and it has nothing to do with
that officeav.dll plug-in used by NAV whatever version. I
even uninstalled SAVCE from one computer and it is the
same problem. Finally, it turned out to be a problem with
some docs created from specific templates, so my
suspicion is that those templates might be corrupted. I
have even recreated one of them and the new doc created
starting from the new template was working perfectly.

I have the same issue.

It has only started to occur since we updated a number of machines to
Office 11

We are not using Norton, so I don't believe that is the issue.
I have checked on a number of sites including technet, msdn but no joy
there either :(

I believe the issue is with Word itself. This is beacause you can open
the doc with wordpad, with no problems.

I don't believe its anything to do with the OS as this is occurring on
Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines.

Sorry I dont have a solution, but maybe a couple of things have been
eliminated.

Have you ever had NAV (or other Symantec package) installed? Have you
updated Office 2003?
