Word 2003 paragraph formatting

I suddenly find I cannot format one paragraph without the
whole document taking up the same formatting. (ie if
I 'bold' one paragraph the whole document becomes bold).
I've tried reinstalling Word 2003 and just about
everything else I can think of. Can anyone help?
