Word 2003 Protected Document Not Responding

I have a document that was created in Word 2007 and protected in Word 2003
portions of the document can be modified. When the document is opened and
modified in Word 2003, it is slow to respond.

Can you expand on what you mean by "slow to respond"? Do you mean it takes
awhile for the document to open? If so then was the document based on a
template? If that answer is yes then was the template located on a network
server? If so, then it could be the template is no longer accessible and
Word is searching for the missing template.
