Word 2003 sluggish to freezing

One of our computers has been running fine until just last week.
the pc opens excel powerpoint and anything else fine. But if I
open Outlook or Word then it freezes every few seconds for a
second or two. this is only momentary, but after a few minutes
can be quite a lot of time. I have turned off all non-essential
services and processes, and have uninstalled and reinstalled
word, but to no avail.

Either Speech Recognition has been enabled or Word cannot see the printer
driver. If it is a networked printer set as the Windows default, try
installing the printer as a local printer and see if that clears the
problem. If it does, try to establish why Word is not seeing the network
printer correctly.

That doesn't make sense, it does not appear to have anything to do with the
printer. I will test your theory, but I have my doubts. it started acting up
after running a few windows/office updates.

I agree it doesn't make sense (at first), but Word needs to interrogate the
printer driver regularly in order to ascertain correct page layout: if it
cannot see the printer driver, it hangs or sometimes crashes.

would this also cause a problem when there is no file open? just word itself?
and should it happen with a blank document?.

Word will often crash on opening (to a blank) if it cannot see the printer
driver. So yes.
