Word 2003 Startup problems

when i try to open ms word 2003, either by double clicking on the application
itself or by trying to open a document from outside the application, it
crashes

i am however able to get into word through the safe mode version

there are no other problems with any other of the applications in the office
suite no software has been installed and there are no viruses or the like...
i also have tryed repairing office, and then also uninstalling it, and
reinstalling it.
