Word 2003: The file filename is not available

M

marzke

I just installed Office 2003 over Office 97. Now I cannot
open any documents: I get "The file xxx.doc is not
available". In addition, I cannot open RTF files, or even
TXT files.

Excel also cannot open files.

I can create files and then save them, but I cannot re-
open them.

I am using XP.

If you are running Norton AntiVirus, disable the Norton Office Plug-in.

What about if we're not running Norton?

I'm having the same problem on two machines. One WinXP and one
Win2000. I can't open any of my old files, Word and Excel. Getting
the same message as everybody else.

Have you activated Word 2003? Have you run the Office Update?

Has anyone seen a solution to this problem yet? I am
having the same problem. Word reports that it is
activated. I also applied all of the updates. I have
tried removing and reinstalling the application as well.
Short of reinstalling the OS and starting over (which I
don't want to do) I am at a loss. Any help
