Word 2003: TOC Page Numbers mixed up on Print Preview

A

Ana Morales

I use Word 2003 SP2

When I open a document and do Print Preview, all the page numbers in the TOC
are the same "1", "2" or “x†number.
If I close the Print Preview and then do Update Field, the numbers appear
correctly. The numbers print correctly if I print the document.

I have tried everything suggested in several Word forums and in the KB
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912940/en-us) but the problem is still there.

I am not using Reading Layout.
I am using footer with a floating image and without tables. I deleted the
floating image to see if that was the cause, but it still does the same.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Ana

PD: I am reposting this problem already reported before but without a final
solution as I have seen.

See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/numbering/PageNumber0.htm.

If that doesn't help, it could be some kind of corruption. Try the
following: Press Ctrl+A to select the entire document. Press
Shift+Left Arrow (this deselects the final paragraph mark). Copy into
a new document. Update the TOC. Save and close the file. Does it
display correctly the next time you open it?

Hi, Stephan, thank you for your reply.

I had already checked all options mentioned in that link with no help:

• A header or footer contains a table, and ---------- NOT USING
• the same header or footer contains a floating picture, and --------- NOT
• the floating picture is anchored to a paragraph within the table, and
--------- NOT
• the header or footer, or its corresponding header or footer, contains the
page number. ---- The page # is contained in the footer; but I have other
documents with the page# in the footer and no problem.

I tried what you suggest (copy/paste) and still nothing. In fact, I had
already tried that several times.

I have two documents (around 80 pages each and in both I use footers,
footnotes, cross references in the body and mirror pages) with the same
problem; they were initially created in Word 2002 without any problem; it was
after we migrated into Office 2003 when this problem showed up, that is why I
am starting to think that there is some hidden bug in this version.

Thanks and best regards,
Ana

If you create a new document, add some heading text and a table of
contents, then can you reproduce the problem? If so, deleting the
blank document template (normal.dot) might fix it. The article at
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm gives
instructions on how to find and rename normal.dot and have Word create
a fresh copy for you. When you've successfully recreated the template,
create a new document and copy and paste the problem document into
that document.

Hi, Stephan, I tried to reproduce the problem in a new document but I could
not.
Anyway, I tried what you said: renamed normal.dot, created a new document
and copied/pasted the old into the new: the problem is still there :-(

Stephan, I suspect there might be something related with the fact that the
old documents were created in a previous version of Office (2002) and updated
into this version (2003); maybe there is something embedded in them, which
does not work well in the new version.

But, do not worry, Stephan, we can live with that; the page numbers work
well when printing, it is just in the preview; I will ask my clients not to
do preview.

Thank you very much for your time and concern, I really appreciate it.

Cheers,
Ana

Besides making sure to install the most recent service pack for Office, I
have no more suggestions. :-(

Anyway, thank you for your feedback.
