Word 2003 Tools/Set Language keeps turning off spell check

When I'm typing a letter & click spell check at end of it I get this message:
Spell Check is complete except for text marked "do not check spelling or
grammar". I know for a fact that there are typos in the letter but they were
not found. This is occurring because when I click on the Tools'Set Language
buttons there is a box checked "Do not check spelling or grammar" -- EXCEPT I
am NOT checking the box - it's happening automatically & it's driving me
crazy. I keep unchecking it but that doesn't matter. I am unable to rely on
the spell check. How do I rectify this irritating problem?
