Word 2003 under Windows XP -- "file not available"

G

gerry

When I try to open a file which I just previously created
and saved I get the error message "The file xxx.doc is
not available", even though it is clearly in the folder
and I can access it with Notepad.

What's wrong?

If you are running Norton Antivirus, disabling the Office Plugin that
comes with it should fix the problem.

I'm running Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate edition. It
doesn't seem to have an Office Plugin. Temporarily
disabling Anti-Virus makes no difference. Also, whenever
I close Word, I get the message "The file Normal.dot
already exists. Do you want to replace the existing
file?" and unless I say Yes it keeps nagging.

I would appreciate any additional suggestions you might
have.

Disabling the Office Plugin in Norton AV Corporate Edition is a bit
harder. Find the OfficeAV.dll file on your system and note the
directory path where it is located. Close all open applications. From
Windows, click on Start | Run. In the Open dialog box, type the command
(including quotes):

Regsvr32 -U "C:\<path>\OfficeAV.dll"

Replace <path> with the directory path for your OfficeAV.dll file. Click
on OK. Hopefully you will get the message: "DllUnregisterServer in
C:\<path>\OfficeAV.dll succeeded." Does that work?

Not that it matters but for some background information and clarity,
the Office Plug-in is not included in Norton CE. Those with Norton CE
who encounter this issue had or have Norton AV installed. Upgrading
from NAV to Norton CE does not unregister the DLL and it is left
registered which is the reason for the need to unregister it using the
regserver /u command. :)

Hi Beth. Thanks for the clarification. I didn't realize the .dll was
an artifact... I thought it was a "hidden feature" in CE.

Thanks A LOT to both of you -- it worked like a charm.
This had been bugging me for a long time. (It had also
screwed up Excel, where it claimed that the file had a
virus.) If either or both of you are ever in our neck of
the woods I'll by you a beer - heck, I'll buy you a case
of beer.

In some of the older versions, Norton AV 2000 and Norton SystemWorks
2000, it was included but there wasn't an option for it in the UI. So
the only way to disable it was to use the regserver /u command.

It took us awhile to figure out it was an 'artifact' for Norton CE
users when the Office Plug-in issue first starting cropping up. We
kept hearing us there is no Office Plug-in option and this fact is
documented on the Symantec site. <grin>

Thanks again, Beth. I feel better that I'm not "remembering" things
that were never so!
