Word 2003- Visual C++ Runtime Library Error

I can't open Word documents. Microsoft Visual C++
Runtime Library- Runtime Error- "Program:C:\Program Files\
Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE" 'abnormal program
termination'
We have a new Gateway computer furnished with 'Office
Basic', we are set up for (2) users. One user can use all
Office programs, the other user gets the error message
when trying to open Word documents. Excel & Outlook appear
to work fine.
I have re-installed the program and downloaded all
available updates for Word with no luck.
I appreciate any suggestions for fixing this problem.
