Word 2003 wont start in Windows Vista

I am running windows vista. about 2 weeks ago, Word 2003 stopped working (I
can only run in safe mode). The error that comes up says that there is no
current solution. I have no other Office 2003 problems.

I just unistalled Office 2003 and reinstalled it. Word worked fine. I ran
auto update, and it still worked after the service pack 3 upgrade. However,
the next time update ran, it picked up Word 2003 security updates as well as
Office 2003 updates. Once that finished, I have the same problem.

Is this a known issue with Vista? Is there a patch or some solution?

Uninstall the updates one at a time until you find the culprit, Once you
have established which update is the problem, we may be close to fixing it.

OK, I removed the following update and it is the culprit. Word works fine
without it, but I am now having to continue to ignore it as windows tries to
update. Any idea when I can again accept it? This is very disappointing.

I cannot find any information about what this up[dates does (other than it
is for security). If we could find out what it 'secures', we could probably
resolve the problem!

But you can FREE support direct from Microsoft for ALL updates that go
wrong. SO I suggest that you call Microsoft and log this as a fault with
them to resolve.

I don't know if this is any use at all but I had same issues with
uninstalling updates was of no use. I found that deleting the Normal.dot file
(Word 2003) and restaring Word fixed it.

Hey guys,

I had the exact same problem.. until I followed speedracer's advice
(deleting or renaming the Normal.dot file).

I had trouble finding the normal.dot file at first (searches found nothing),
but I ended up finding the bugger. These are the steps I took:

1. Run Word 2003 in safe mode
2. Tools > Templates & Add Ins...
3. Add..
4. And bingo! That illusive Normal.dot should be staring right at you!
5. Rename it (rather than deleting it, just in case)
6. Close word and restart it

Word 2003 should work as normal again.. Hope this helps!
