We are having a problem with Word 2003 opening older
documents (97,2000,2002), when you open them you get the
message "Word was unable to read this
document. It may be corrupt."

Once you repair the document's you get the below error
responses.

Internal Data Integrity (Type 4)1
and/or
Internal Data Integrity (Type 2)2

Hi Glen,

I would request you to download all the office update for the 2003.
http://office.microsoft.com/OfficeUpdate/default.aspx

Microsoft has released an update for Microsoft Office 2003. This update
fixes a problem that occurs when you try to open or to save a Microsoft
Office PowerPoint 2003 file, a Microsoft Office Word 2003 file, or a
Microsoft Office Excel 2003 file that includes an OfficeArt shape that was
previously modified and saved in an earlier version of Microsoft Office.
When a PowerPoint 2003 file, a Word 2003 file, or a Excel 2003 file is
opened in an earlier version of Office, empty "complex" properties may be
introduced into the file and a bit may be changed in the file record that
describes these properties. Earlier version of Office will ignore this bit
value but when this bit value is detected in Office 2003.

Also please take a look at Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 828041
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=828041

Please let me know if i can be of further assitance...
Thank You...
Raghu...
