To keep my users from deleting my custom xml tags, I used the procedure
outlined in Brian Jones' blog:
http://blogs.msdn.com/brian_jones/archive/2005/9/9.aspx
This works great for keeping users from deleting my tags, except for when
they want to use Track Changes. Track Changes in Word 2003 is broken. If you
protect a document either by using the method outlined in Brian's blog or
with form fields, and turn on Track Changes, users are able to delete the
brackets designating the protected areas, causing Word to crash when saved.
But that's a whole other can of worms.
My problem is when I designate many ranges in my document as editable, the
document slows to a crawl. My guess is the sheer number of editable ranges is
causing this slowness.
I tried turning off Smart Tags, Check Spelling as you Type, and Check
Grammer as you Type. This helps a little on my machine. My machine is a
development machine, and the fastest in the company. The document is totally
unusable for my users.
The funny thing is if I put text form fields around every item in the text
and turn on "Filling in Forms" protection, there is no speed degredation, but
the document triples in size.
My question is: Is there another option under Tools -> Options that I can
turn off to speed up the document?
Thanks in advance for any help on this problem.
