I have encountered two problems with Word 2003:
1. If there are no documents open, the application closes
automatically. How can I stop this happening?
2. When moving files to a new file, the file format was
automatically changed to .dot. The files were created
with .doc extensions in Word 2000, but had been based on
templates when originally created. Is this a known bug?

2. Once a template always a template. You can rename a template to a .doc
extension but Word knows it is a template whatever you call it and will
treat it as such.

1. Have you updated using the Help, Check for Updates link?
