Word 2004: Formatting Palette Styles List Oops

Shortly after upgrading to Office 2004, I starting playing with the new
Formatting Palette. Unfortunately, I goofed up the Styles list that displays
under the palette subheading "Pick style to apply."

How did I do this? While "All Styles" was the display in effect, I dragged
the style named "List" out of the "Pick style to apply" list. Ever since,
that style refuses to appear under "Pick style to apply," although the
next-level styles List 2, List 3, etc. continue to show up when "All Styles"
is selected. Note: When I use the Styles command to apply the style "List"
to a paragraph, then the style name will appear under the Formatting Palette
subheading "Current style of selected text" whenever that paragraph is
selected but still not under "Pick style to apply."

I have searched for a Formatting Palette preference file (to trash) and have
not found one. Furthermore, this palette, unlike toolbars, doesn't have a
reset function, and its customizing dialog doesn't include any way to return
to defaults. Getting rid of the Normal template doesn't help, and I can't
find any relevant information about the Word 2004 Formatting Palette on
Microsoft's support site.

What am I missing? Is the only solution to reinstall Word 2004?

Thanks for listening!

Hi Debi-

This won't be of much help, but I've never removed the List style from my
Formatting Palette yet it still doesn't show up there. Also, it does not
appear in the Style list on the Formatting toolbar. The only place it can be
located seems to be in the Format>Style dialog box.

FWIW, I have tried to drag other Styles away from the Formatting Palette
with _no_ success. The only way I know of to remove a Style directly from
the Formatting Palette is to select it, open its menu and choose the
'Delete' command.

Is it possible that you simply 'think' you removed it since it isn't there?

Hello, CyberTaz.

It's quite possible that I just think I deleted the style (knowing me!).

Just a question though: You said that the style "List" doesn't show in your
Formatting Palette. Do the next-level styles (List 2, List 3, etc.) show as
they do for me?

Thanks,

Debi

I see the same thing both of you do. I'll try to find out why "List" is
missing from the Palette's All Styles list. If/when I get an answer, I'll
post back here.

Apparently, the Formatting Palette's "All Styles" list *should* be called
"More Styles", or something like that, since it's missing more than just
"List." Hopefully this will get corrected in some future release.

But the fact that "List" is missing when "List 2" et al are present is
*really* dumb it seems to me.

Hi Beth-

I figured someone would pick up on that...

Since the subject came up I've realized that others are missing as well. But
unless you know they exist you'd never notice. It does seem odd that a 1st
level should be the only one left out of a series.

What seems even more weird is that the lists from which they are missing
should be populating from the same source as the list where they _do_ show
up. Curious!

Thanks so much Beth (and CyberTaz, too).

I guess I didn't delete the style in reality. Boy, am I confused! I remember
trying to do that when I was experimenting (right after upgrading).

Anyway, I sure hope this missing-style-in-list problem gets cleaned up soon.
Seems to me that it should be a patch and not something held over for the
next version.

Cheers!

One should never assume how difficult something is to implement,
especially in applications which are still based on 20 year-old legacy
spaghetti code.

Doesn't mean it *couldn't* be included in a patch, but my development
experience is that modifications to existing code are often inversely
proportional to how easy it "should" be...
