word 2007 aborts with vista, but the beta version works. Why?

Running Vista RC2 build 5744. The beta version of office 2007 works, but the
latest office 2007 from the MSDN site aborts - specifically word 2007 and
powerpoint 2007. All others seem to work. Any ideas?

I downloaded build 5744 via my msdn account yesterday. Will the RTM be
available via MSDN soon?

They pulled the Vista RTM versions on MSDN earlier today, for some reason.
Maybe the servers couldn't handle the heat. :)

Installed Vista RTM (updated the RC2), removed Office 2007 beta, and
installed the Office 2007 - still get the program abort for Word and
Powerpoint.

Installed same software on another computer (this time upgrading from XP
Professionional, instead of the clean install described above) and all
software works.

The install that aborts is on a Dell Precision 670, the install that works
is on an XPS 600.

Sorry - my typing doesn't keep up with what I was thinking. Here's what i have:
Precision 670, RC2 as a clean install, updated with RTM - Office 2007 beta
works (all), Office 2007 final works excepts for Word and Powerpoint. The
failure occurs immediately after the program opens, states that a failure has
occurred, would you like to start in Safe mode. After selecting yes, the
program tries to start in safe mode, aborts, and then asks if you want to
start the Microsoft Office Diagnostics. I select yes, and it runs the entire
procedure, but finds nothing wrong. When I attempt to start Word again, the
pattern repeats.
Precision 670, RTM as clean install - Office 2007 final - all works.
XPS 600, XP Professional, updated with RTM - Office 2007 final - all works.

It seems as long as the RC2 is not involved, the RTM/Office final
combination works. I am trying to ensure that when we upgrade all of our
computers early next year, that we can do so without requiring blank hard
drives.

The printers are the same- all are network printers installed from the
directory of available printers. In this case, (all Dell printers) a 3100
color (default), a 5100 color, and a 5300 black. These are all network
printers, attached to the network via CAT5, and all use the same server as
print server (server 2003 box).

The two builds I described for the Precision 670 are the same machine - when
I was having trouble with the build that had the RC2 on it, I installed
another drive (blank) and did a build from scratch.

On the build that works, I am having trouble installing the 2 color printers
- so far I have only sucessfully installed the 5300. When I try to install
either of the color printers, I get a prompt that "To use the shared printer,
you need to install the printer driver on your computer.". After I select the
option to install the driver, an error message pops up the "Windows cannot
connect to the printer. The specified print monitor is unknown."

On the build that had RC2, all printers installed without problems, and the
printers were still available after the upgrade to the RTM version. I think
that I will try to set up the printers with standard TCP/IP ports, and print
directly to the printer instead of going through the print server queue.

Dell 5100? My hunch was right ;)
Don't try the thing you suggested, try something else: Use the drivers
for those Dell printers (I'd assume all Dells you have) that Microsoft
provides. Don't use the ones provided by Dell.
The Dell drivers cause PPT & Word to crash, while the MS drivers seem to
work.

Let us know if it worked.
