Word 2007 and Vista - add-in tab has gone missing

E

I use Naturalreader to do text-to-speech. One of the package's
"claims to fame" is that it can put a toolbar in Word and other
programs. Highlight the text and it'll speak the text. It worked
relatively well until I upgraded to Vista. Then then the add-in tab
went missing.

I can see Naturalreader in the add-in section under Word Options and
have it checked. I've tried a variety of things but no luck so far.

Any ideas?

Did you ever see it in Word 2007? Or was it never there in the first
place?
The Add-Ins tab only shows if there is content for it.

The add-in tab was there and worked fine until I installed Vista.
Haven't seen it since.

Which add-in tab are you talking about? The one in the Word Options dialog?
Or, the one at the far right end in the ribbon?

If the latter, the add-ins tab shows only when a specific add-in is open.
What add-in are you talking about?

Sounds like the add-in you are missing isn't compatible with Vista. I'd
try removing and reinstalling the add-in first and if that doesn't work,
get in touch with the manufacturer of it.

I'm referring to the Add-ins tab on the right hand side of the ribbon.
The add-in is for Naturalreader (text-to-speech application). The
support folks at Naturalsoft say the program is compatable with Vista
but speak of right-clicking on the toolbar to get the add-in to
appear. I may be misunderstanding them.

I removed and re-installed the program but no luck.

That sounds like instructions for Word 2003 to me. In 2003, you have the
ability to show a hidden toolbar. 2007 doesn't allow you to do that
though.
You can probably make it appear with a line of VBA code though. Maybe
one of the Word MVPs who knows VBA a lot better than I do can volunteer
a link or the appropriate line of code?

I would suggest to give the support folks another call anyhow though.
Tell them to take a look at http://pschmid.net/blog/2006/10/18/68. That
will tell them exactly what you can and cannot do in Word 2007 in this
regard. I suspect that you won't be the only person who is going to
encounter this problem once you upgrade to 2007, so they'll probably be
able to find a solution for everyone with your case.

I appreciate the advice. I've sent emails to my friends at Microsoft
and Naturalsoft and will go from there.

Just a heads up to anyone else who runs into a similar problem.

I selected the NaturalReader "run as admisistrator" option (right
click on program in program list and select) and the add-ins tab
returned. I'm not sure it's the right way but it'll do until I hear
from the Microsoft and/or Naturalsoft support people (looks like it
might be a while)

Sounds like NaturalReader has a problem with the new User Account
Control in Vista. I guess they haven't updated their program for that
yet.
