I have this problem for about 1 year or 2... but since this thread is silent for long, has any of the previous posters found a solution?
Since no-one has said it, I'll say it here: the problem is that if Word isn't already opens, it will fail on double-click on a file with "Can't find file". It only works if Word is already open.

Word 2007 attachments fail to open first time

I have three possibly related (?) problems using Vista Home Premium, Outlook
2007 and Word 2007 - that together are rendering Office / Vista almost
unusable
1. On trying to open a Word attachments from an email, they invariably
don't open first time. Instead they return the message "the system cannot
find the file specified". On returning to the email and double-clicking
again, the file opens as normal
2. On choosing to SAVE Word attachments rather than open them directly from
Outlook they save as type "All files" unregistered to any program (with no
alternative allowed). This leads to a long-winded opening or renaming process
afterwards
3. On trying to double-click and open my own Word files from Documents there
is a very frequent error "Word cannot find C:\users\myname\etc etc Make sure
you typed the name correctly then try again.
Any help would be very welcome
Thanks

I run Vista Business and Office 2007 Professional and I experience the same
problems. But I don't only have the problem with Word. Excel also has the
same hassle every now and again
I am the only one from my list of business associates and friends who run
Office 2007, so 99% of the documents I work on are 2003 models. I also create
files in the compatibility mode as standard. I am not sure if it is only the
2003 files that have the problem
Any assistance here would be very appreciated

I hope I'm not speaking too soon ... but the Microsoft update that has just
installed seems to have cured this problem ... well at least I have just
opened a document from a folder and one from an email at the first attempt
for the first time in months
I'm crossing my fingers

Anyone have an answer?!

No answer sorry but if you open Word (or Excel etc first, depending on
your file type), then double-clicking the filename in explorer will
work correctly.
This is why it is working the second time - the application is then
already running.
This is happening for us on Vista Business, Office 07 with files on a
Small Business Server 2003 fileshare (mapped network drives from login
script).
Having the app running already is the key. Of course, we shouldnt
need to do that, but something's broken!

Re: Word 2007 attachments fail to open first time
Hi,
I also have the same problem, I run Vista 64 with Office 2007. The
Office files won't open the first time. When you click the file again
when the Office 2007 program is windows is completely loaded. The file
starts. No other programs have this issue, so it must be a bug in
Office 2007.
Strange Microsoft has not fixed the problem, they must have noticed.
I can only hope Microsoft fixes the problem soon.

I have had the same problem since about Jan 2006 using Win XP Pro
(with all patches) and Outlook 2003 and Word 2003. I have Outlook set
to not use work as its editor.
I agree... it is rather annoying. I'm glad someone else is having the
problem.
Has anyone found a cause or solution for this?
I have this same problem since 2007 or 2008, and no update has solved it. I can't seem to find anywhere a solution for this, but this thread is silent for two years now: has any of the previous posters found a solution?
Since it hasn't been said earlier, I'll say it here: the problem is that Word "fails to find the file" if Word isn't open previously. It can fail twice if the second attempt takes place before Word completes its "opening" process.
