Word 2007 Crashes on Open - Default Email Client?

I am getting the dialog boxes when I download a Microsoft Office
document from an email in Google Chrome (Running Google Apps) and try
and click the downloaded item at the bottom of the screen.

"Word automatically saved changes to the Normal document template. Do
you want to load it?" then over the top of that I receive "The command
cannot be performed because a dialog box is open. Click OK, and then
close open dialog boxes to continue."

When I select Yes to the first one it opens a third dialog box which
says "Either there is no default mail client or the current default
mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run
Microsoft Office Outlook and set it as the default mail client."

Any ideas on why this is happening and how it can be remedied?
