Word 2007 doesn't allow old "styles" to display as does Word 2003.

Is there any way Word 2007 can display the formatted styles I have grown to
love from a previous Word version? I recently spent several days playing with
a computer lab's version of Word 2007, and was so frustrated by it that I
have now set up my own PC at home -- with Word 2003. Word 2007 seems to be a
dumbed down version of 2003, with lots of pretty pictures displaying on the
menu bar, but it appears to be missing some excellent features from Word
2003. I consider myself a Word power user and would need to be hog-tied and
lobotomized before I would consider upgrading to Word 2007. But that's just
one person's opinion.

I'm not sure I'm following what you mean on "old styles". I suspect you are
referring to the Styles task pane? It's still there. To display it, click
the dialog box launcher in the Styles group (on the Home tab) or press
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S.

There is far more to Word 2007 than just a new look. The features you loved
in past versions are still there and some have received a much needed
face-lift. For those who are power user to advanced Word users, typically
find it's a bit of a shock at first and some are downright outraged. ;-) BUT
it doesn't take long to adapt and perhaps discover new features that you
wonder how you ever lived without. :)

Are you referring to "Keep track of formatting"? You'll find this option in
Office button | Word Options, Advanced category (listed under "Editing
options").

If you want the entries in the Styles task pane to be formatted, click the
"Show Preview" option at the bottom of the pane.
