Word 2007 drawings disappear

Hi,

I am using Word 2007, and have lost drawings a number of times. In each
case I have used a canvas to create my drawing, and happily saved / printed
it. When I have opened the file at a later date the canvas is still their,
but has no drawing inside. The canvas does not seem to behave as a normal
canvas anymore (you can't add new items to it...they just float on top).

I've been through and checked the settings relating to displaying and
printing drawings / placeholders (many times). Nothing seems to be wrong
their. I'm not using wrapping, and I'm viewing in print layout mode (the
problem is the same however I view the document).

The last time this happened the very last thing I did was to print the
document then save it. The drawings were present on the hard copy, but the
next time I opened the file the drawing was gone.

Any help would be appreciated very much.

Thanks.

Are you sure the drawings are gone and not simply failing to display? Check
each of these settings:

Office button - Word Options - Advanced - Show drawings and text boxes on
screen
should be checked--this is the usual culprit (Show picture placeholders
should not be checked, as you clearly know)

Office button - Word Options - Advanced - Show background colors and images
should
be checked

Office button - Word Options - Display - Print drawings created in Word
should be
checked

Office button - Word Options - Display - Print background colors and images
should be
checked

(The latter two affect the display of drawings only in Print Preview)

Is the document in native 2007 format or compatibility mode?

I have the exact same problem. Document is in native 2007 format (.docx). And
no, it seems that problem is not with the display options.
Actually i have 20-25 drawings (i.e. canvas elements with figures on it) in
my document, and only two of them recently became invisible and unusable (i
can't add figures to these canvases anymore).

I've experienced this issue several times before.
