Word 2007 - hidden characters :: search & replace impact

B

Barry

We have recently upgraded from Office 2003 to Office 2007.

It seems that there are hidden characters in our older documents - created
with Word 95/97 - that are causing search & replace and spell check to fail.

Is anyone familiar with this problem? Is there a root cause? Is there a
workaround? Will this be addressed in an imminent patch coming from
Microsoft?

Thanks,
Barry

Can you give us an example of the characters and proofing failures?

These hidden characters are most often ^ and {. On some documents when we
do a search & replace or a spell check - the process never returns a
completion. It hangs or loops.

Is there another character followed by the ^? The caret (^) isn't a hidden
character, unless it's formatted as hidden in the Font formatting? Can you
email me a sample document so I can take a look? To obtain a valid email
