Start narrator in the operating system. Try Windows key + U.

That's one way of doing it - but however it doesn't appear to be able
to read what i've written inside word - anyone have any other
suggestions?

Sorry that just reads what characters you tupe. Open the Language Bar in
Toolbars on the Taskbar, and in Options there, pick "Speak text".

ahh thanks, that looks more promising, however i cant see that in the
options, but i looked in the help file, but can see nothing about it

sorry i'm feeling tired, i'll try to explain that one a bit better,
i've loaded up the language bar on the toolbar, and i looked in help,
and explained about it in there... but i haven't got it to work yet, i
think i need to restart.

yes, in the Language bar, pick Options and then Speak Text. You're welcome.
