Word 2007 losing file

Alex

Hi
I was just working on a file in word 2007, when I encountered a problem with
word and it shut down. But the file would not recover, and it actually
deleted the file so I could not access it - there was no sign of it in the
folder where it was kept and I could not open it from anywhere - it kept
saying it could not locate it when I tried to open it from previously used
documents in word.

I managed to open a .tmp file from the folder the file used to reside in.

I've never come across this before - is this a new featurette of Word 2007?

I've never seen that happen. Had the file been saved previously? Are backups
turned on? If so, the the file might still exist in .wbk form.

To protect yourself in the future, make sure you save often, and it's not a
bad idea of have both AutoRecover and Always create backup copy both
enabled. For AutoRecover, see Office > Save (I keep it set at 5 minutes).
For backup, see Office > Advanced, Save section.

AutoRecover works by creating an .asd file every x minutes when there are
unsaved changes. When you save, the .asd file is deleted; it is created
again the next time there are unsaved changes and x minutes has elapsed.

Backup works by creating a file with the extension .wbk each time you save
an open file. So, if I'm working on Herb.docx and save it, the previous
contents of Herb.docx are copied to Backup of Herb.wbk. So, at any given
moment, the docx (or doc, etc.) file contains the most recent changes, and
the .wbk file constains the second most recent changes.

Hi - thanks for your post

yes the file had been saved previously without any issues.
I am not sure without checking about the settings but will follow your
instructions - thanks

Alex,

Have you checked your "...\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\.." folder
for .asd files?
